 The Political Science Club (formerly known as The SPE Nation Club) continues its series of events with Social Phenomena: The Evolution of Feminism in the 20th Century. In the midst of our movie screening and debate on Superman, one of the topics that was brought up involved the relationship between Superman and the "lady in distress", Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane. The arguments involved the fact that Ms. Lane was the only female character depicted in most of the Superman cartoons of the World War II era, and the fact that she was always portrayed as being helpless and in need to be saved. Inspired by the discussions, we have decided to organize a special event dedicated to feminism as a social phenomenon of the 20th century. In order to get an insight on the situation, for approximately 2 hours, we will watch clips and footage archives from different decades - starting from the propaganda movies from the two World Wars that encouraged women to take up jobs and support the military, and going through the movements and protests of the 1950s and 1960s United States of America. We will wrap up our presentation with two examples from popular culture where the ideas of feminism are depicted very differently - The Simpsons and The Powerpuff Girls. Thus, from a temporal point of view, all the three Waves of Feminism shall be covered. The Political Science Club, an initiative of the FSPUB students from the English language study programmes.
